The best morning routine for men

Six simple steps for any wake-up time, plus a 10 minute version.

The best morning routine for men is short, simple and done in the same order every day. Drink water, move your body, clear your head, pick what matters today, then start the most important thing before the rest of the world gets to you.

It does not need a 5 a.m. alarm, an ice bath or 15 steps. Below is a six step routine you can run at any wake-up time, a 10 minute version for busy days, and how to keep it going when life gets in the way.

What is the best morning routine for men?

The best morning routine is the one you will still be doing in six months. That means a few basics, in the same order, that look after your body first and then point you at your day. Here is the one we use as a base:

StepWhat you doTime
1. WaterDrink a full glass of water before anything else.1 minute
2. MoveWalk, stretch or do a short workout.5 to 30 minutes
3. Clear your headSit quietly, breathe slowly or write a few lines. No phone.2 to 10 minutes
4. Read your linesRead the few lines that say who you are building.1 minute
5. Pick today's tasksChoose three to five things to get done today.2 minutes
6. StartDo the first ten minutes of your most important task.10 minutes or more

That is about 20 minutes on a short day and up to an hour on a long one. Eat when you are hungry, before or after you move. You can swap steps 2 and 3 if that suits you better. What matters is that the order stays the same each day, so you stop having to think about it.

Does a morning routine need set times?

No. A good morning routine is a set order, not a set clock. If you get up at 6 one day and 7:30 the next, you still run the same steps in the same order.

Plans like "5:00 wake up, 5:05 cold shower, 5:10 journal" look good online. They break the first morning you sleep badly or something comes up. Then the whole day feels like a fail, and the routine gets dropped.

Structure gives you a steady start. Strict rules make you want to rebel. So keep the steps and let the times move. Some mornings you will do all six. Some mornings you will do one. Both count.

If you do want to get up earlier, move in small steps. Our guide on how to wake up early covers the night before, the alarm and getting out of bed.

What should a man do first thing in the morning?

Look after your body first: water, food when you are hungry, and some movement. When the basics are missing, everything feels heavy, and you put off the hard stuff without knowing why.

No amount of discipline makes up for skipped basics. So before you start on work, run a quick check:

  • Have I had some water?
  • Have I eaten, or will I eat soon?
  • Have I moved my body, even for five minutes?
  • Have I had one quiet minute before the noise starts?

If the answer to any of these is no, fix that first. Then get to work.

Should you work out in the morning?

Moving your body in the morning is a good way to wake up and start the day with a win, but it does not have to be long or hard. Five minutes counts. When the body is sharp, the mind follows.

Pick what fits the time you have:

  • 5 minutes: a walk around the block, or ten squats, ten push-ups and a plank.
  • 15 minutes: a few stretches for your hips and back, then one round of bodyweight moves.
  • 30 minutes: our full home workout for men with no equipment, warm-up included.

If you train later in the day, keep the morning to a walk or a stretch. The point is to move, not to train hard twice. Stop any move that causes sharp pain. If you have an injury or a health condition, talk to a doctor before you start a new workout.

Should you check your phone first thing in the morning?

Leave it until your routine is done. The moment you open messages, email or the news, your morning belongs to other people.

Your phone is full of other people's needs: their questions, their problems, their headlines. None of it is your plan. Give yourself the first part of the day before you let it in.

A few ways to make that easier:

  • Keep your phone in another room until you reach step 6.
  • Leave do not disturb on until your routine is done.
  • Move the apps that pull you in off your home screen.

How do you clear your head in the morning?

Give yourself a few quiet minutes with no screen and nothing coming in. Sit with a coffee and look out the window, breathe slowly, or write a few lines on paper.

Then read the lines that remind you who you are building. Some men write a short page about the man they want to be: how he acts, what he never skips, how he carries himself. Others pick three short positive affirmations for men. Read yours first thing in the morning and again at night, out loud if you can.

It might feel strange at first. Keep going anyway. Five honest minutes beats a full page you force out.

How do you plan your day in the morning?

Pick three to five tasks for the day, and no more. Long lists make you freeze. A short list gets you moving. Use this mix:

SlotWhat it isExample
EssentialLooks after your body or mindTrain, cook a real meal, get to bed on time
UpkeepStops life piling upPay a bill, answer emails, do the dishes
ProgressMoves something you care about forwardWrite one page, call one client, practice guitar for 15 minutes
Bonus (1 or 2)Only if you have energy leftClear out the garage, plan the weekend

If it does not fit on the list, it does not belong to today. Then make the progress task small enough to start right now. "Work on the business" is too big. "Write the first paragraph of the sales page" is clear, and you can finish it.

Do the first ten minutes of it before you open your phone. That is step 6 of the routine. Starting is the hardest part, and once it is done you are already ahead.

What is a good 10 minute morning routine?

On a busy morning, shrink every step instead of skipping the routine. Here is the 10 minute version:

  1. Drink a glass of water. (1 minute)
  2. Do ten squats, ten push-ups and a short plank. (3 minutes)
  3. Sit still and take ten slow breaths. (1 minute)
  4. Read your lines. (1 minute)
  5. Write down your three tasks for the day. (2 minutes)
  6. Do two minutes of the first one. (2 minutes)

Ten minutes keeps the habit alive. Skipping it "just this once" is how a routine slowly stops. On the worst mornings, do one step. A glass of water still counts.

How do you stick to a morning routine?

Do it again tomorrow. One good morning changes nothing on its own. The same few steps, done day after day, are what make it part of who you are.

  • Start smaller than you want to. Two or three steps you never miss beat six you do twice a week.
  • Keep the order the same. After a while, one step leads into the next without a thought.
  • Set it up the night before. Clothes out, water by the bed, tomorrow's first task on paper.
  • Make it a standard, not a goal. A goal is something you hope to hit. A standard is the floor you do not go below.
  • Tick it off. Mark each morning you do it on a calendar. A long row of ticks is hard to break.

A good morning is one part of a good day. For the habits that fill the rest of it, read our guide to habits for men, or see all our life guides.

Questions

Quick answers.

How long should a morning routine be?

Anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. Start with the time you can give every day, not the time you wish you had. A short routine you keep beats a long one you skip.

What should I eat in the morning?

Eat when you are hungry, and keep it simple. Some protein, some fruit or vegetables and a glass of water is a good start. If you are not hungry yet, have water first and eat a little later.

Should I meditate in the morning?

If it helps you, yes. A few minutes of sitting still and breathing slowly is one simple way to clear your head. If sitting still is not for you, write a few lines or take a quiet walk instead.

What if I start work very early?

Shrink the routine to fit. Water, a few minutes of movement and your three tasks can all happen in 10 minutes. Save the longer version for your days off.

What if I miss a morning?

Do the 10 minute version, or just one step, and start again tomorrow. One missed morning does not undo the habit. Giving up because of one missed morning does.
