Self improvement for men: where to start

The three areas to work on, which comes first, and a plan for this week.

Updated 4 Nov 20269 min read

Self improvement for men is the work of getting better on purpose in three areas: your mind, your body and your life. Start with your body, add one small habit in each area this week, and build from there.

This page is the map for everything on Creating Kings. It shows what each area covers, how the three fit together, where to start and a simple plan for your first week. Then every guide we have, sorted by area, so you can go deeper on the part you need.

What is self improvement for men?

Self improvement for men means becoming a better man than you were, by your own standard, one choice at a time. It happens on normal days, in small choices: what you do when the alarm goes off, what you say to yourself before a hard task, where your money goes on a Friday night.

You set the standard. For one man it means getting fit. For another it means keeping his word, saving money or finally starting the thing he keeps talking about. There is no single list. Comparing yourself to other men gets you nowhere either, because you see their best moments and your worst ones. Measure yourself against the man you were last month.

The work never really ends, and that is fine. You do not need to fix everything at once. You need to get a little better in the places that matter most to you, and keep going.

What are the three areas of self improvement?

The three areas are your mind, your body and your life. Almost everything you want to get better at fits into one of them.

AreaWhat it coversA sign it needs work
MindThe voice in your head, belief, doubt, focus and disciplineYou talk yourself out of things before you try them
BodyTraining, food, sleep and energyYou feel tired and soft, and you have stopped moving much
LifeYour mornings, habits, work, money, time and the people around youYour days run you, instead of you running them

You do not need to work on all three at full speed. You need to know where you are weakest, so you know where to put your effort first.

How do mind, body and life fit together?

They feed each other. When the body is sharp, the mind follows. When the mind is clear, you make better calls about your time, your money and your people. And when your life has some order, it is much easier to train and think straight.

The thread that runs through all three is proof. What you believe about yourself works like a scale. Every time you act like the man you want to be, you add weight to that side. A workout you said you would do is proof. So is a plan for tomorrow written the night before, or a hard task done first thing.

Each kept promise counts in all three areas, because each one tells you the same thing: I do what I say. That is why small wins matter so much. A big plan you drop after a week adds nothing to the scale. A small habit you keep adds a little every single day.

Where should a man start with self improvement?

Start with your body. It is the easiest place to see proof, it gives you energy for everything else, and the first steps are simple: walk every day, train three times a week and go to bed at a steady time.

Training is also the clearest promise you can keep. You said you would train for 20 minutes. You trained for 20 minutes. There is nothing to argue about. A clean win like that carries into the rest of your day.

There is one exception. If one problem is costing you every single day, start there instead. If doubt stops you from acting, start with your mind. If your mornings fall apart and you put off everything that matters, start with your life. Fix the thing that hurts most first, then come back to your body.

Whatever you pick, keep the first step small. Changing everything on a Monday feels great for a day or two. Then life gets in the way, and it all goes at once.

What can you do this week to start?

Pick one small habit in each area and keep all three for seven days. Each one takes 20 minutes or less, and none of them needs a gym or any gear.

AreaThe habitWhenTime
MindWrite one line about the man you want to be. Read it, then keep one small promise to yourself today.Morning2 minutes
BodyWalk for 20 minutes.Any time20 minutes
LifeWrite the 3 things that matter most tomorrow. Plan to do the hardest one first. Before bed5 minutes

Then run the week like this:

  1. Write the three habits on paper. Put it somewhere you will see it every day, like next to your bed.
  2. Tick each one off when it is done. A tick is proof. Seven days of ticks puts real weight on the scale.
  3. If you miss one, do it the next day. Do not double up, and do not wait for Monday to start again.
  4. On day seven, look back. Which habit was easy? Keep it. Which one was hard? Make it smaller. Then add one thing for next week, like three short workouts.

It looks too small, and that is on purpose. A week of small promises kept is worth more than a big plan you drop by Thursday.

How do you improve your mindset as a man?

You improve your mindset by choosing the voice in your head on purpose, then backing it up with action. Notice what you say to yourself, swap the lines that hold you back, and keep small promises until the new lines feel true.

When doubt hits, use three steps. Name it: that is just doubt. Ask: what would I do anyway? Then take one small step now. These guides go deeper on each part of your mind:

How do you improve your body at home?

Train with your own body weight three times a week, walk every day and go to bed at the same time each night. You do not need a gym to start. Push-ups, squats, lunges and planks on your living room floor are plenty for your first months.

A few small habits help it all along: protein at every meal, water before your coffee and daylight in the morning. Start with the first guide below, then add the others as you get stronger.

How do you take control of your life as a man?

Take control of your life by deciding what matters, planning tomorrow tonight and building a few habits that run without much thought. Your life is your days added up, so better days make a better life.

Start simple. Set one goal for this year. Save something every week. Read 10 pages a day. Look at where your money went last month. Spend more time with men who push you to be better. These guides help with the rest:

How to stop procrastinatingWhy it is often overload, not laziness, and how to shrink the task.
Hobbies for men30 hobbies that build your body, your mind, your skills and your circle.

How do you know you are getting better?

You know you are getting better when you look back at what you did, not at how you feel. Feelings change by the hour. A record of what you did stays put.

Once a week, take five minutes and answer three questions on paper:

  1. Which habits did I keep this week, and on how many days?
  2. What did I do this week that the old me would have skipped?
  3. What is one thing to add, shrink or drop next week?

Then compare this month to last month. More ticks, more reps, a calmer head on a bad day, a plan you kept. Those are the signs. If the honest answer is "not much", do not quit. Make the habits smaller and start again tomorrow.

Each area has its own page with three habits to start this week and every guide for that area in one place. Pick the one you need most: our mindset guides, body guides or life guides.

Questions

Quick answers.

What is the first step in self improvement for men?

Pick one small habit and do it today. A 20 minute walk is a good first step, because it is simple, free and you can do it anywhere.

What are the three areas of self improvement?

Mind, body and life. Mind is the voice in your head and your discipline. Body is training, food and sleep. Life is your habits, work, money and people.

Should I work on everything at once?

No. Pick one small habit in each area, or start with your body alone. Add more only once the first habits feel easy.

How long does self improvement take?

There is no finish line, and nobody can give you an honest date for big changes. Track what you do each week instead of counting the days.

What if I keep starting and quitting?

Make your habits smaller. Shrink each one until it feels almost too easy, keep it for a week, and only then make it harder.
